The head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, led the kickoff ceremony for the 2024-2030 Scrappage Program. The main objective of this initiative is to remove thousands of abandoned vehicles from public spaces to ensure safer streets and better mobility. Brugada called on citizens to report abandoned cars in order to proceed with their removal, aiming to clear roadways throughout the year 2025.
During the event at the facilities of the Traffic Signaling and Operations Directorate of the Citizen Security Secretariat in the Iztapalapa municipality, Clara Brugada highlighted that a total of 31,974 vehicles have been incorporated into the Scrappage Program from 2019 to February 2025. Soon, the destruction of 691 compact cars and 2,780 motorcycles will take place. The official reminded that this program was initiated in 2019 by the then head of government and current president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and has been strengthened over time.
The Scrappage Program aims to reclaim public spaces to prevent visual pollution, improve citizen safety, and free streets from obstacles that affect mobility. The goal is to maintain the continuity of this task in coordination with the municipalities to continue improving roadway conditions in Mexico City.
Clara Brugada also informed about the procedures to request the removal of an abandoned vehicle in any of the 16 municipalities of CDMX. Citizens can report these cases on the social media channels of the Citizen Security Secretariat or through the appropriate email. Responding to these types of requests is one of the most frequent concerns of citizens, along with requests for more lighting and pothole repairs in the city.
Pablo Vázquez Camacho, head of the SSC, emphasized that the Scrappage Program has successfully removed 31,000 abandoned vehicles since 2019, with more than 8,800 coming from Iztapalapa. Additionally, more than 43,000 vehicles and motorcycles that entered the depots for various reasons have been scrapped, contributing to the reduction of pollutants and environmental protection. In the first months of 2025, there has been a 30% increase in the removal of vehicles compared to the previous year, strengthening the operation of the program and avoiding the saturation of vehicle depots in Mexico City.
