This Monday, March 10, a marked change in climatic conditions is expected in Mexico due to cold front number 33, which will bring rain and a drastic drop in temperatures. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua), at least 23 states in the country will be affected by this weather phenomenon.
Cold front number 33 and its associated cold air mass will primarily impact the northeast, east, and southeast of Mexico. Extremely low minimum temperatures are expected in several mountainous regions of the country. For example, minimum temperatures below -15 degrees with frost are forecasted in mountainous areas of Durango, from -15 to -10 degrees in Chihuahua, and from -10 to -5 degrees in mountainous areas of Sonora and Zacatecas.
In addition, minimum temperatures of -5 to 0 degrees are expected in various states, such as Baja California, Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala, Puebla, and Veracruz. In other areas such as the Sierra of Sinaloa, Nayarit, Tamaulipas, Querétaro, Mexico City, Morelos, and Oaxaca, minimums of 0 to 5 degrees are expected.
On the other hand, the arrival of a "Norte" event with wind gusts of up to 100 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, and 50 to 70 km/h in Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo is anticipated.
Meanwhile, there will be regions where the heat will be felt strongly. In states such as Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, maximum temperatures of 35 to 40 degrees are expected due to anticyclonic circulation at mid-levels of the atmosphere. In Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Colima, State of Mexico, Campeche, and Quintana Roo, maximums of 30 to 35 degrees are expected, creating a hot to very hot environment.
