Decline in Homicides reported in Mexico

Recent reports indicate a notable decrease in homicides in Mexico, highlighting the effectiveness of new security strategies. Despite the overall drop, certain regions remain significantly affected by violence, particularly in Guanajuato.

Decline in Homicides reported in Mexico

Homicides in Mexico have shown a decrease in recent months, according to Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System. In a morning conference on March 11, Figueroa mentioned that seven states have the highest number of homicides, with Guanajuato leading with 713 cases, representing 15.9% of the total.

Among the cities with high incidence are Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, León, Celaya, Chilpancingo, and Acapulco, as well as various localities in Chiapas. To address this issue, 32 state Peace Tables and 266 regional ones have been established, with significant participation from women and girls, strengthening the role of communities in the pacification of the country.

Within the program, key actions have been implemented such as door-to-door visits, assistance to the population, the creation of Peace Committees, organization of Peace Fairs, educational workshops, sports activities, interventions to rehabilitate public spaces, among other initiatives.

Regarding voluntary disarmament, there has been a significant anonymous surrender of weapons, highlighting the exchange of war toys for educational and recreational items. Cooperation agreements have also been signed between states for better coordination in conflict zones.

Despite the advances in some regions, violence continues to be a challenge, especially in states like Baja California, Estado de México, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Michoacán, and Sonora. Although there has been a decrease in homicides at the national level, Guanajuato remains the most violent state, followed by other entities with high crime incidence.

Experts warn that while there are progress in reducing violence, it is essential to consolidate the actions implemented to ensure sustainable long-term reduction. It is important to maintain the comprehensive approach of the public security strategy, which combines social attention, recovery of spaces, sports, and voluntary disarmament.
