World Meatless Day: Reflecting on Nutrition

March 20 is celebrated as World Meatless Day, promoting a plant-based diet that can reduce the risk of diseases and be more efficient in water use.

World Meatless Day: Reflecting on Nutrition

Meat production requires a large amount of water, approximately 4,000 liters to obtain 227 grams, while crops are much more efficient in using this resource. This is why the Farm Animal Reform Movement (FARM) advocates for a plant-based food awareness. On World Meatless Day, celebrated on March 20, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) indicated that the livestock industry is responsible for 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, 70% of the world's agricultural land is devoted to feeding livestock, thus contributing to deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

According to specialists, adopting a meat-free diet can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as improve overall health and help maintain an ideal weight. Since 1985, World Meatless Day, observed every March 20, invites reflection on the impact of food on animals, the environment, and health. This day aims to raise awareness about the benefits of a vegetarian and plant-based diet.
