Profeco Recommendations on Egg Storage

The Federal Consumer Protection Agency in Mexico issues recommendations for the proper handling of eggs due to rising prices, highlighting their preservation and freshness.

Profeco Recommendations on Egg Storage

The Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco) issued a series of recommendations regarding the proper storage and handling of eggs amid the discussion about the rising prices of this food in Mexico. Eggs are an important food due to their content of proteins and healthy fats, which is why consuming them in moderation is beneficial for a balanced diet.

In Mexico, eggs are a staple food in cooking due to their high nutritional value and versatility in the preparation of dishes, so their proper storage is key to avoiding contamination and ensuring freshness. According to Profeco, eggs are stored at room temperature in supermarkets, but once purchased, it is preferable to keep them in the refrigerator.

Profeco reminded the importance of not using eggs that have passed their best before date, as bulk eggs do not have this information. It recommends following certain guidelines for their proper handling, such as not storing them for too long and checking their freshness before consumption.

How to properly store eggs? Once purchased, it is advisable to refrigerate them to maintain a stable temperature. Avoid placing them in the refrigerator door, do not wash them before storage, and keep them in their original packaging are some of the guidelines recommended by Profeco for proper preservation.

To identify a spoiled egg, it is important to check that the shell is clean and free of cracks and that when broken, the white does not appear watery. Any unpleasant odor or inconsistency in the clarity of the egg may indicate bacterial contamination, so it is recommended not to consume it in those cases.

To handle and cook eggs safely, it is advised to wash hands before and after handling them, not to use the shell to separate the yolk from the white, cook them properly to eliminate bacteria, and refrigerate them immediately after preparation to prevent cross-contamination and ensure freshness.
