Investigation of Irregularities in Drug Purchases

The Undersecretary of Integration and Development of the Health Sector, Eduardo Clark, revealed during a morning conference that in the most recent bidding for the purchase of medications, 175 supplies were awarded to suppliers that did not offer the best cost. This acquisition represents 6% of the supplies in the consolidated purchase of medications 2025-2026.

Clark explained that complaints from other participants in the bidding led to the discovery of this fact. The Ministry of Health has begun collaboration with the Anti-Corruption and Good Governance Secretariat after detecting an overpricing of more than 13 billion pesos by Biological and Reactive Laboratories (Birmex).

Three officials from Birmex linked to the case have been separated from their positions to facilitate the ongoing investigations. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo clarified that, although the contracts were awarded, the supplies have not yet been purchased. All institutions have been notified to prevent the acquisition of the 175 items identified as problematic.

In case any irregularity is confirmed by any public official at Birmex, the items in question will not cause harm to the treasury. Clark emphasized that both administrative and possibly criminal laws will be complied with in this process.
