The Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office (Profeco) has conducted an analysis of packaged fruit juices, identifying which are the sweetest, as well as those that contain sweeteners. Among the products analyzed are Boing with mango and grape flavors, Disney's Jugo Natura Premium, and Del Valle Reserva, the latter with the least amount of sugar in its 200-milliliter presentation.
According to Profeco, the consumption of sweeteners in minors is not recommended, as it can have negative effects on metabolism, such as decreased insulin sensitivity and increased blood glucose concentration. Some brands that add sweeteners to their drinks are Jumex, Frutsi, Del Valle, Vigor, Florida 7, Paupau, and Friko.
On the other hand, it is noted that the National Institute of Public Health has recorded a 7% increase in ailments in children aged 5 to 11 years between 2006 and 2020-2022, linked to excessive sugar consumption. Conditions such as insulin resistance, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases may result from high sugar intake.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that free sugar intake be less than 10% of total energy needs, which equates to less than one 250 ml glass of sugary drink per day. In Mexico, a high percentage of the school and adolescent population consumes more added sugars than recommended, according to the National Health and Nutrition Survey.
In its analysis, Profeco verified aspects such as commercial information, labeling, ingredients, expiration dates, and the amount of sugar in 51 packaged juice products. It is recommended to preferably consume whole fruits instead of packaged juices, as they tend to have high levels of added sugars.
Additionally, it was highlighted that the analyzed beverages shared truthful information about their sodium content, sugar, energy content, and non-caloric sweeteners, aiming to avoid confusion among consumers.
