Prevalence of FOMO in Nuevo León

Experts in Nuevo León have confirmed that the Fear of Missing Out, or FOMO, is affecting 40% of social media users in the region. Although this anxiety initially arises during active use of the platforms, it has been observed that it returns during moments of calm, becoming an addiction that affects people of all ages.

According to Patricia Lozano, a social media analyst, the concern of not being aware of what’s happening online has become a significant issue. This phenomenon, which can trigger anxiety and depression, particularly affects university students who struggle to balance their academic obligations with time spent on social media.

On the other hand, for certain individuals, such as influencer Mario M., social media has become a profitable livelihood. Despite dedicating most of his time to this activity, Mario emphasizes the importance of not becoming obsessed with online popularity and maintaining an appropriate balance.

According to data from the Secretariat of Culture and the Nuevo León Council, internet users in the region spend more than two hours daily on social media, which represents a significant part of their internet time. Platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram are the most used, and constant usage has led a portion of the population to experience FOMO.

FOMO, described as the fear of missing out on what is happening online, can generate symptoms of anxiety and panic in users who feel the constant need to check their networks. Although it is not an illness, this psychological condition can affect the mental well-being of those who experience it. Experts emphasize the importance of recognizing this problem and establishing a healthy balance between digital life and everyday life.
