Significant Hydrocarbon Spill in Dos Bocas

The Agency for Security, Energy, and Environment (ASEA) has intervened due to a significant hydrocarbon spill at the Dos Bocas Maritime Terminal, located in the municipality of Paraíso, Tabasco. In an official statement, ASEA announced that it will conduct a detailed inspection of Pemex (Petróleos Mexicanos) to clarify the causes of the incident, determine the amount of crude oil spilled, and evaluate the necessary remediation actions by the company immediately.

The spill has raised concerns about its environmental impact in the coastal area of Tabasco. While the exact extent of the damage is still being assessed, preliminary reports suggest the presence of hydrocarbons in at least 16 kilometers of coastline, which has led to the preventive closure of beaches and the suspension of fishing and tourism activities in the area.

Municipal authorities placed black flags on Playa Sol as a preventive measure since Sunday, May 4, in response to evidence of what appeared to be tar. ASEA, as an agency affiliated with the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), responsible for regulation and supervision in the field of industrial safety and environmental protection in the hydrocarbons sector, reiterated its commitment to environmental conservation.

The agency committed to keeping the public informed about the actions that will be taken and the progress in managing this environmental emergency. So far, Pemex has not provided a detailed public statement regarding the incident, and it is expected that ASEA's supervision will clarify the details of the spill and the corresponding responsibilities.

The local community, especially fishermen whose activities have been directly affected, is keenly awaiting the results of the investigation and any support measures that may be implemented to mitigate economic and environmental damage. Pemex's Olmeca refinery, known as 'Dos Bocas,' has received complaints about environmental impacts in the region, including previous reports of hydrocarbons at Playa del Sol in August 2024.

Local authorities, in collaboration with Pemex, closed the beach at that time and began cleanup efforts.
