The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) took actions and temporarily closed the Churubusco Plant of Ternium, following the spill of substances that likely contaminated the La Talaverna stream. Santos, president of the Chamber of the Transformation Industry in Nuevo León (Caintra), indicated that the relocation of companies like Ternium would not be the solution to the pollution.
Profepa detailed that inspectors in Nuevo León conducted several visits to verify compliance with necessary measures after the spill of ferrous chloride, acidic water, and hydrochloric acid on April 17. The incident occurred due to the failure of a tank at the Tank Farm, causing the La Talaverna stream to exhibit an orange to reddish hue along its course that crosses several municipalities.
The total temporary closure was imposed on April 18 and executed on May 6. Santos stated that the company is collaborating with authorities to remedy the situation, emphasizing that relocation is not the fundamental solution. He highlighted the importance of coexistence between industry and civil society to prevent such incidents in the future.
"We regret the accident that occurred; clearly, what we are convinced of is that the company is working hand in hand with both federal and state authorities," declared Santos. He assured that Ternium has proven to be a good neighbor and a good corporate citizen, committed to remedying the problems caused by the spill.
