Popocatépetl Volcano Alert Remains at Yellow Phase 2

The Government of Puebla reported that the Popocatépetl Volcano Alert Signal “remains at Yellow Phase 2”, according to monitoring by the National Disaster Prevention Center (CENAPRED). In a press release, the state's General Civil Protection Coordination stated that as part of the volcano's recent activity, “32 exhalations, 76 minutes of tremor, and 24 minutes of exhalation sequences were recorded”. It detailed that between 08:08 and 10:15 on Sunday, “an episode of moderate amplitude tremor” occurred, accompanied by “emissions of water vapor, gas, and ash”, with an estimated height of 1.0 to 1.5 kilometers above the crater and dispersal towards the north-northeast. The agency stated that “permanent monitoring of the volcano and continuous coordination are maintained to promptly track the activity of Popocatépetl”. The wind forecast indicates that in case of ash emissions, dispersion could head towards the west and northeast, over the regions of Atlixco, Angelópolis, Sierra Norte, and Sierra Nororiental, as well as towards Tlaxcala, Veracruz, State of Mexico, and Hidalgo. Finally, the state's General Civil Protection Coordination mentioned that warm weather is expected during the day, with light to moderate rains in the Sierra Norte, Sierra Nororiental, and Sierra Negra. Additionally, light rains are forecast for the rest of the state and southeast winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour, calling on the population to “take extreme precautions”.
