Two-Year-Old Federico Dies in Crash While Being Flown to US for Burn Treatment

A domestic accident with boiling water caused burns on nearly 40% of his body, leaving his health in critical condition and his family clinging to any chance of saving him. In Mérida, Mexico, where he was receiving initial medical care, his parents made a difficult yet hopeful decision: to sign a voluntary discharge to transfer him to Galveston, Texas, where Shriners Children's Hospital awaited to provide specialized treatment. The transfer was made possible by the support of the Michou and Mau Foundation, an organization that for years has accompanied Mexican children with severe burns on their journey to a second chance at life. Federico was not traveling alone on Monday afternoon. He was surrounded by people who believed in his recovery and who were part of a humanitarian medical mission organized with the Mexican Navy. The objective was to get him to a hospital alive, where he could receive advanced, free, and internationally standard care. But the journey was cut short before reaching its destination. Tragedy in the Sky The Mexican Navy aircraft in which he was being transporting crashed in Galveston Bay, very close to the elevated bridge connecting the island to the mainland. The impact left at least five people dead, including the boy, whose fight was tragically cut short in the middle of the sea. Authorities confirmed that the cause of the accident is still under investigation, while rescue teams, divers, and specialized personnel worked in an area marked by dense fog and reduced visibility. Amid the tragedy, a woman with severe injuries was rescued alive, trapped inside the almost submerged aircraft, a fact that highlighted the magnitude of the impact and the chaos experienced in the first minutes after the disaster. The Mexican Navy expressed its condolences to the affected families, and the Michou and Mau Foundation reiterated its commitment to continue supporting children with severe burns, even in the midst of pain. Federico did not make it to Texas, but his story remains as that of a boy, barely two years old, who flew propelled by hope, his family's love, and the solidarity of those who turned his mission into an act of humanity. Federico was only two years old, but he was already fighting a battle that would break the soul of many adults.
