Strong Earthquake in Mexico: Two Dead

A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale shook the center and south of Mexico this Friday, leaving a preliminary toll of two people dead and at least 12 injured. According to the National Seismological Service, the quake was recorded at 07:58 local time with its epicenter near San Marcos, in the state of Guerrero, and at a depth of only 5 kilometers, which increased its perceived intensity in various regions. The governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, confirmed the death of a 54-year-old woman in a locality near the epicenter after her home collapsed due to the seismic movement. In Mexico City, the Citizen Security Secretariat reported the death of a man in the Benito Juárez borough; the victim suffered an apparent cardiorespiratory arrest while descending the stairs during the seismic alert activation, which caused a fatal fall. Mexico City authorities reported that emergency services are evaluating 34 buildings and five houses with detected structural damage. Additionally, power outages were registered in several colonies of the capital. Mexican authorities are maintaining monitoring for possible aftershocks and have asked the population to take extra precautions in structures that have cracks or visible damage.
