Nestlé México Recalls Infant Formula Batch Over Possible Contamination

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) reported that Nestlé México is withdrawing the infant formulas NAN Alfamino and Alfamino, imported from Europe, from the market. This is due to the possible presence of the cereulide toxin, produced by the microorganism Bacillus cereus in one of the ingredients used in the affected batches, which can cause nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.

The authority specified that the withdrawn products correspond to the 400-gram presentation of each formula. Among the batches involved are NAN Alfamino with batch numbers 52030017Y2 and 52040017Y1, with expiration dates of July 22 and 23, 2027, respectively, as well as Alfamino with numbers 51060017Y2 and 51070017Y1, with an expiration date of April 30, 2027.

Cofepris clarified that the measure applies only to these batches and does not affect other products of the brand. The Commission recommended that the public not acquire or consume the mentioned products and, if they have purchased them, to discontinue their use, consult a healthcare professional, and report it to the company through its website.

“Cofepris will maintain health control actions and inform the public if new evidence is identified, in order to prevent health risks to the population arising from products, services, or establishments that violate current health legislation,” the agency stated in a press release.

The withdrawal is being carried out as a preventive measure after identifying probable contamination of one of the ingredients in the implicated batches. Nestlé México made a digital platform available to consumers to handle any reports related to the withdrawn products and reiterated that the measure is limited exclusively to the indicated batches of NAN Alfamino and Alfamino in the 400-gram presentation.

Earlier this week, Nestlé announced the withdrawal of infant formulas SMA, BEBA, and NAN in European countries across the continent due to the possible presence of the toxin. The measure affected 23 European countries, including Denmark, Austria, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, as well as Turkey and Argentina.
