Mexico Strengthens Measures Against Measles Amid Regional Resurgence

In 2025, Mexico recorded an increase in measles cases, part of a regional resurgence in the Americas. In response, authorities have strengthened surveillance and launched a massive vaccination campaign aimed at protecting vulnerable populations. The Ministry of Health emphasizes that vaccination is the key tool to prevent the spread of the virus and reduce mortality.

The Ministry of Health reported an increase in measles cases in 2025, which occurs within a documented regional resurgence of the disease in the American continent. This phenomenon has been documented and timely alerted by the Pan American Health Organization and health authorities of different countries. This regional behavior has motivated the strengthening of surveillance and response actions in Mexico, in line with international guidelines for the control of vaccine-preventable diseases. The Ministry of Health has defined mass vaccination as the main instrument for prevention and control, especially in contexts of population mobility and regional transmission. Official information indicates that more than 90% of confirmed cases correspond to people with no history of vaccination. Likewise, severe cases and deaths are mainly concentrated in young children, people with incomplete vaccination schedules, as well as in populations with malnutrition or weakened immune systems. Since the detection of the first imported case on February 14, 2025, corresponding to a minor with no vaccination history in the state of Chihuahua, the Ministry of Health immediately activated international containment protocols. The Ministry of Health urged mothers, fathers, and caregivers to review the National Health Card and go to medical units to complete vaccination schedules, remembering that the measles vaccine is free, safe, and highly effective.
