Sharp Increase in Violence Against Women in Querétaro

During the first quarter of the year, the Querétaro State Secretariat for Women attended to a total of 1,009 cases of violence against women from Querétaro, representing an average of nearly 11 cases per day. According to data from the agency, between January and March, 1,030 in-person interviews were conducted with women who reported being victims of violence. In 98% of these cases, signs of physical or psychological abuse were confirmed, leading the complainants to be referred to the agency's psycho-legal services. Although specific figures were not detailed, the head of the agency, Sonia Rocha, stated that the majority of the cases involved domestic violence. Additionally, she indicated that most requests from victims were directed towards processes involving parental rights, external psychological care, and legal representation for divorce. "We must continue working precisely so that women know we exist, and so that collectives know they can request our assistance for a woman when they do not have that service," she said. Rocha Acosta highlighted that in addition to in-person interviews, her secretariat provided 1,950 psychological services, 4,528 legal services, 167 social work services, and 460 telephone attendances, for a total of 8,135 services for violence against women so far in 2026. She also reported that the Legal Representation Area initiated 59 lawsuits, of which 36 have so far resulted in favorable sentences for the women, representing a 61% effectiveness rate. Similarly, she informed that the shelter for battered women currently houses 4 women and 4 children, who receive accommodation, food, and services at no cost while legal processes against their aggressors conclude, while simultaneously preparing for an independent life. Furthermore, she mentioned that the Transversality Area has held 133 training sessions on violence, gender perspective, and human rights for a total of 6,092 people.
