The Government of the State of Mexico, through the Secretary of Health, has implemented different health promotion measures in cemeteries and their surroundings with the aim of reducing the risks of diseases during the Día de Muertos celebrations.
The actions implemented include orientation talks and training on the importance of proper handwashing, safe preparation and handling of food and beverages, as well as the use of protective clothing such as white aprons, hairnets, or caps, and the proper disposal of solid waste.
The 18 jurisdictions of Health Regulation collaborate with their staff to inspect the infrastructure of bathrooms, designated trash areas, and the zones where food sales will take place. According to the authorities, the governor of the State of Mexico, Maestra Delfina Gómez Álvarez, has emphasized the importance of protecting the health of those who visit cemeteries in the state and the active promotion of preventive measures against health risks.
Macarena Montoya Olvera, the state Secretary of Health, closely supervises the work of Health Regulation, urging food establishment owners to use boiled or purified water, store ingredients in properly sealed containers, and comply with necessary hygiene standards. The agency will also carry out inspections at tourist sites and cultural festivals, as well as initiatives to prevent diseases and accidents among the population.
As for recommendations for citizens, it is advised to bring bottled water when attending cemeteries to avoid dehydration or heatstroke, use damp sand in vases instead of water, remove containers with water, such as bottles or cans, to prevent mosquito breeding, refrain from burning weeds, and avoid walking among open graves. To report violations, the Health Regulation Coordination has set up the email denuncia.regulacionsanitaria@edomex.gob.mx and the phone number 722-213-7000.
