Forum on Addictions in the State of Mexico

The State of Mexico is hosting a forum on human rights and addiction care, aiming to improve treatment and prevent malpractice in residential centers.

The Health Secretary of the State of Mexico, Macarena Montoya Olvera, emphasized the importance of addressing prevention, treatment, and control of addictions from the perspective of the internal function of residential centers. At the forum "Human rights and regulations in residential care for addictions", it was highlighted that these spaces are fundamental for the integration and regulation of services aimed at individuals with addiction problems at a time when this issue has gained greater relevance.

Montoya Olvera stressed the need to strengthen a comprehensive care model in these centers to optimize their efficiency and effectiveness in processes. Specifically, she mentioned the importance of implementing constant training mechanisms for health personnel, in order to ensure compliance with addiction regulations and guarantee the protection of patients' human rights.

Raúl Naveda López Padilla, Director of the Mexican Institute of Mental Health and Addictions (IMSAMA), explained that the main objective of the forum is to work collaboratively with all involved institutions so that residential centers receive the necessary training and the stigma surrounding this sector of society is eliminated. It was emphasized the importance of treating each person seeking help in these spaces with dignity and respect, protecting their rights so that they can rebuild their lives.

The proposed approach implies that these centers should be governed by a regulatory framework that ensures the comprehensive well-being of patients, based on professional and humane care. The importance of collaboration among public, social, and private sectors, health professionals, and communities to achieve this objective is highlighted. The event was also attended by Salvador Valles Santa Ana from the Human Rights Commission of the State of Mexico (Codhem), and Guadalupe Herrera López, Director of the "San Judas Tadeo" Rehabilitation Clinic for Alcoholism and other Drugs.
