In the community of Apeo, in Maravatío, Michoacán, independent activists have reported that at least 70 dogs, cats, and pigeons were poisoned. Medali Chamorro Ramírez, an animal rights activist with more than 10 years of experience, received a call last Thursday alerting her about bleeding dogs on the public road. Upon arriving at the scene, she encountered a devastating scene of lifeless animals, some of which were poisoned with kibble contaminated with a lethal blue powder.
"Enough of such animal cruelty!" expressed the activist, urging the Attorney General's Office, the state government, and the Maravatío city council to take vigorous action to enforce laws against animal cruelty. Although a complaint was filed with the Zitácuaro delegation of the FGR, a case file number has not yet been provided, although there is hope that a thorough investigation will be carried out.
Chamorro Ramírez recalled that such acts are not isolated, as around 200 dogs and cats have died in similar circumstances in the area over the last three years. The State Commission for Human Rights of Michoacán initiated a complaint ex officio after the activists reported the mass poisoning of animals in Maravatío.
In Mexico City, in the Condesa and Escandon neighborhoods, Miguel Hidalgo borough, a case of dog poisoning has also been reported. Neighbors reported that poison was placed in the streets, resulting in the death of several dogs. Dishes of food containing poisoned meat were found, raising alarms among residents.
In light of these events, pet owners are advised to walk their animals on a leash and avoid letting them consume food they find on the street to prevent more cases of poisoning in the affected areas.
