The General Director of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition 'Salvador Zubirán' (INCMNSZ), José Sifuentes Osornio, was awarded the Medical Merit Recognition 'Valentín Gómez Farías' 2024, the highest distinction granted by the government of Mexico in the field of health. During the ceremony commemorating Doctor's Day, the recognition was delivered by the Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich Stalnikowitz, at an event organized by the General Health Council.
In total, José Sifuentes Osornio has published 323 articles in scientific journals and several books, being recognized for his outstanding work in the field of public health. During the ceremony, several leaders in the health sector highlighted the importance of medical ethics and the necessity of universal and quality public health, coinciding with the legacy of Valentín Gómez Farías.
Among the attendees were Martí Batres, General Director of the Institute of Safety and Social Services for State Workers (Issste), Zoé Robledo Aburto, General Director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), and Marta Zapata Tarres, head of the Coordinating Commission of National Institutes of Health and High Specialty Hospitals (CCINSHAE).
Upon receiving the award, Dr. Sifuentes Osornio emphasized that being a doctor goes beyond a profession; it is a vocation that requires commitment and dedication. With 48 years of career dedicated to public health, he has made significant contributions in the field of infectious diseases, being recognized as a professor and leader in several medical associations.
The ceremony not only recognized the work of Sifuentes Osornio but also highlighted the collective effort of health workers in Mexico, who face daily challenges in their mission to care for and improve the health of the population. Secretary of Health Kershenobich reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening primary care and prevention, guaranteeing a unique and accessible healthcare system for all Mexicans.
