
In Nuevo León, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) treated 56 people with symptoms of mild poisoning or anxiety attacks due to an ammonia leak at a factory in the municipality of El Carmen. So far, no unconscious patients or fatalities have been reported. Most of the affected individuals showed mild symptoms or anxiety, and 14 of them have already been discharged for recovery.
The IMSS representative in Nuevo León, Dr. Tonatiuh Ortiz Castillo, coordinated the medical evaluation of employees suspected of poisoning at the General Zone Hospitals (HGZ) No.42 and other medical care facilities. A total of 56 patients with poisoning symptoms were registered, of which 11 were treated at Family Medicine Unit No.25.
Civil Protection of the State responded to the company Curtidos Treviño after receiving a report about a strong ammonia smell at the site. 276 employees were evacuated and 42 people with symptoms such as nausea, coughing, and vomiting were treated, and they were transported to the IMSS clinic by ambulances. Authorities continue to conduct checks in the area to determine the exact cause of the leak.
The IMSS informed that, after the evaluation carried out by Civil Protection of El Carmen and the company Curtidos Treviño, three individuals showed mild poisoning, receiving immediate treatment with oxygen and bronchodilators at HGZ No.6. Monitoring of the situation and care for the patients affected by the ammonia leak is ongoing.
