Alarming Rise in Homicides in Mexico

During the past week, alarming figures of violence were recorded in Mexico: 389 murders in total, along with the death of 38 suspected members of criminal groups in confrontations with the Army in Sinaloa and Guerrero. Guanajuato topped the list of entities with the most homicides, followed by the State of Mexico, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa.

In October, 1,867 homicides were counted across the country, with a daily average of 74.6 murders. Comparatively, in the last year, October reported 2,148 homicides with a daily average of 69.2. These figures reflect an alarming outlook of violence in Mexico.

The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico indicated that, on average, between 450 and 500 victims of intentional homicide are recorded weekly in the country, with an average of 71 daily, highlighting the persistence and severity of criminal violence in the nation.

Official reports do not include members of criminal groups who died in confrontations with the army, indicating that the more than 351 homicides in the last five days exclude these casualties. Additionally, it was noted that in September, 242 femicides were reported, totaling 16,096 murdered women during President López Obrador's term, marking a record in the country's history.

In general terms, the López Obrador government concludes its term with a balance of 199,952 intentional homicides, a 28.1% increase compared to the period of Enrique Peña Nieto and 66% higher than that of Felipe Calderón. These figures highlight the serious situation of violence and insecurity that persists in Mexico despite efforts to contain it.
