The Civil Protection Secretariat of the State of Veracruz announced on Monday, October 28, the suspension of classes in at least 15 municipalities due to severe flooding caused by heavy rains. This measure was taken to ensure the safety of students and educational staff, as numerous areas have suffered severe damage from river overflow and water accumulation in low-lying areas.
The municipalities where school activities have been suspended are: Acula, Chacaltianguis, Hidalgotitlán, Isla, Jáltipan, Jesús Carranza, Minatitlán, Saltabarranca, San Juan Evangelista, Santiago Tuxtla, Tlacotalpan, Lerdo de Tejada, San Andrés Tuxtla, Texistepec, and Hueyapan de Ocampo, which are located in the southern and central regions of the state of Veracruz. The heavy rains in the last 72 hours have caused an increase in water body levels and road closures.
The National Meteorological Service (SMN) forecasts that the rains will continue in the region in the coming days, which is why authorities remain alert, monitoring river and dam levels. Rapid response teams have been deployed to address emergencies arising from the increase in water levels.
The suspension of classes is a preventive measure to reduce risks among students and teaching staff, considering the difficulties of transportation due to the condition of the roads and rural paths. Educational authorities will assess the situation daily to determine when it will be safe to resume educational services in the affected municipalities. Meanwhile, families are urged to follow recommendations from authorities to avoid dangerous situations.
