Mexico's New Medication Purchasing Process Unveiled

The president, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced during her morning press conference that a new method will be implemented for the consolidated purchase of medications, aimed at achieving better prices than those obtained previously. This will be carried out through a transparent process that invites all parties involved in health supply to participate.

The Undersecretary of Health, Eduardo Clark, explained that this initiative aims to ensure the availability of medications for all Mexicans receiving care in the public sector, ensuring the best price conditions for the Mexican State. The new contracting model will be based on the implementation of digital systems throughout the process, in order to promote transparency and national and international participation to encourage competition and ensure optimal quality and pricing of resources.

The medication purchasing process will begin with a call this Thursday, concluding on March 1, 2025, with the delivery of the medications. The Secretary of Health, David Kershenobich, emphasized the importance of efficient cost management in medication purchases and highlighted the oversight that the agency will carry out throughout the process.

The crisis due to the shortage of medications in the Mexican health sector worsened in 2019, as a result of budget cuts and changes in medicine procurement driven by the previous government. In response to this situation, an annual purchasing process for medications worth 130 billion pesos will be implemented, ensuring transparency, absence of corruption, and the participation of all institutions to ensure access to health for the Mexican population.
