According to studies by the Secretary of the Environment (Sedema) and Greenpeace, even plastic products have a high water cost, with more than 2,000 liters of water needed to produce one kilogram of plastic. In the case of the food industry, the production of food also entails significant virtual water consumption; for example, 500 grams of cheese require around 2,500 liters of water, while one kilogram of meat needs 15,000 liters.
To be aware of our water footprint, especially during the holidays, the recommendation from Somos Pura is to make informed decisions when consuming. It is important to consider that many products we use daily, from clothing to food, require considerable amounts of water to be produced, a resource that is often overlooked. For instance, the production of a t-shirt can require up to 2,700 liters of water, while one kilogram of meat needs 15,000 liters.
Lucas Barrionuevo, co-founder of Somos Pura, highlights the direct consequences for the environment due to the increased consumption during the last quarter of the year, where products such as gifts, clothing, and food are purchased without considering the amount of water used in their manufacture. In addition to clothing and food, products like jeans (8,000 liters of water) and a smartphone (12,760 liters of water) also have a significant water impact.
Given this situation, it is suggested to opt for second-hand gifts, purchase clothing made from sustainable materials, and reduce the number of products we buy. Virtual water represents one of the most significant invisible costs today, being a crucial issue in a context of water scarcity both nationally and globally. Acting responsibly and promoting conscious consumption will not only contribute to the conservation of the planet but will also allow us to enjoy the holidays in an ethical and sustainable manner.
