High Veterinary Costs for Pets in Mexico

At the morning conference on Thursday, November 14, 2024, the alarming situation of the high costs that Mexicans face when taking their pets to the veterinarian was addressed. The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted this issue that affects many pet owners in the country.

According to reporter Gustavo GarcĂa, the costs of consultations in veterinary clinics range from 300 to 800 Mexican pesos, which represents a significant financial burden for many families. This high price often leads to situations where owners cannot afford the necessary treatments for their pets, even being forced to sacrifice the animals due to lack of resources.

According to data from Inegi, 57% of Mexican households have pets and allocate a part of their income to their care. However, in cases of illness or severe injuries, the additional expenses required can exceed the financial capacity of families.

In light of this situation, President Claudia Sheinbaum was asked whether the Federal Government is considering the creation of Veterinary Welfare clinics as part of the reforms to prohibit animal abuse. Sheinbaum mentioned that, while pet care is in the hands of the states, collaboration is possible to assess how the situation can be improved.

On the other hand, the Chamber of Deputies approved reforms to the Constitution to guarantee the protection and proper treatment of animals, in an effort to prohibit animal abuse and ensure the welfare of pets in Mexico.
