Tropical Storm Sara Approaches Quintana Roo

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has reported that a change in direction is expected for the storm on Sunday morning, moving northwest towards Belize and the south of Quintana Roo. Tropical storm 'Sara' is forecasted to make landfall in the afternoon on Sunday, possibly becoming a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

According to the SMN, 'Sara' is expected to cause very strong and intense rains in Quintana Roo, Campeche, Yucatán, Tabasco, and Chiapas in the coming days, as its cloud bands gradually cover the Yucatán Peninsula and southeastern Mexico. Currently, the center of the tropical storm is located northeast of Honduras.

In a press conference, it has been indicated that 'Sara' could intensify to a category 1 hurricane or remain as a tropical storm on Sunday. The forecasted trajectory shows that on Friday and Saturday it will move westward, skirting the coasts of Honduras, before degrading to a remnant low-pressure system on Monday and Tuesday, moving over Tabasco and Chiapas.

The consequences of 'Sara' will be particularly felt in Campeche, Tabasco, Chiapas, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo, with cloudy conditions and rain in the coming days, in addition to strong winds, possible waterspouts, and elevated waves on the coasts of Yucatán and Quintana Roo. Significant rainfall accumulations are expected in these states.

In light of this scenario, meteorological authorities have urged the population and maritime navigation to take precautions. In fact, possible port closures in Majahual, Xcalak, and Chetumal, Quintana Roo, are anticipated due to the forecast of waves in the coming hours.
