This morning, more than one hundred elements from the Secretariat of the Environment, the Commission of Natural Resources and Rural Development, the Federal Attorney General's Office for Environmental Protection, the Secretariat of National Defense, and the National Guard conducted an inspection visit at a storage and transformation center for forest raw materials in Santo Tomás Ajusco, Tlalpan mayoralty.
During the inspection, 0.693 cubic meters of squared wood were secured, including pieces of beams, planks, bars, and a quarter of the genus Pine in green physical condition, as well as a 3.5-ton Ford cargo vehicle. These actions are part of the "Comprehensive and Systemic Strategy against Illegal Logging," promoted by the head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, along with the governors of the State of Mexico and Morelos.
The strategy aims to eradicate illegal logging and protect the Water Forest through the creation of a specialized commission, inter-institutional operations, and the identification of those responsible for the violence in the area. In Mexico City, forests are located in various boroughs and are essential for water infiltration and oxygen production.
More than 60% of the water consumed in Mexico City comes from the aquifers recharged in these areas, making the protection of forests crucial for ensuring an adequate water supply and preserving the ecological environment in the region.
