Storm Sara Approaches Mexico, Heavy Rains Expected

The tropical storm named 'Sara' is expected to make landfall in Honduras this Friday and then turn northwest, affecting Belize and the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. However, meteorologists indicate that it is most likely that 'Sara' will not re-emerge in the Gulf after crossing the peninsula.

The formation of 'Sara' has surprised many as it is unusual to have a cyclone at this time of year. During the 2024 hurricane season, Mexico has been impacted by three cyclones in the Atlantic: hurricane 'Beryl' and storms 'Chris' and 'Alberto'. In the Pacific, hurricane 'John' and storm 'Ileana' have also caused havoc in the country.

The tropical storm 'Sara' has generated concern due to the heavy rains it will cause in southeastern Mexico, according to the National Meteorological Service. Currently, 'Sara' is located near Honduras with sustained winds of 80 km/h and is moving west at 15 km/h.

Due to the circulation of 'Sara', heavy rains are forecasted in Quintana Roo, as well as strong rains in Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, and Yucatán, with intense winds and elevated waves in several coastal areas. These precipitation events are expected to be accompanied by electrical discharges and hail, raising alerts about possible landslides and flooding in the mentioned regions.

Regarding its trajectory, 'Sara' is expected to maintain its course towards Belize after passing through Honduras. In its latest update, it was located southeast of Belize with maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h. Meteorological agencies continue to closely monitor the evolution of this storm and issue the corresponding alerts to the affected areas.
