Traveling Safely with Pets: Essential Tips

Traveling with pets can be a complicated task, especially if it involves unknown destinations or if the pet must travel in a carrier. It is essential to get animals accustomed to traveling in cars, and in the case of cats, which are usually more nervous, it is recommended to take frequent short trips leading up to the journey. Blanca Olivera, a representative of the Animal Rights Movement, suggests practicing routes with them to help them adapt to the situation.

Regarding safety during the trip, it is crucial for pets to travel with a collar and ID tag to prevent loss in case of accidents. Additionally, it is vital to keep the pet calm during the journey to avoid distractions for the driver and thus reduce the risk of accidents on the road.

Concerning restrictions, females in heat, pregnant animals, and puppies under five months should not travel for safety reasons, as they may create conflicts with other animals or require special care that cannot be adequately attended to during a journey.

To find pet-friendly accommodations, it is advised to check reviews and visit the place beforehand to ensure it meets the appropriate conditions. It is essential to consider the weather at the destination and make short trial trips to remote places to see how the pet reacts in new situations.

As for the average costs of travel items for pets, options include identification tags ranging from 99 to 349 pesos, harnesses from 109 to 480 pesos, among other accessories that can be found in specific stores.

For travel within and outside of Mexico, Blanca Olivera recommends meeting necessary health requirements, such as having the appropriate vaccinations and internal and external deworming done at least a month and a half before the trip. It is essential that the vaccination card is properly signed and stamped by a veterinarian with a professional license.

Finally, it is suggested to pack essential items for pets, including a collar with an ID tag, leash, usual food, a carrier or a seatbelt extension, and tracking devices like AirTag. With these preparations, a safe and comfortable journey for pets can be ensured, thus contributing to a pleasant vacation experience for everyone involved.
