Tropical Storm Sara Threatens Southeastern Mexico

Tropical storm Sara is located on land to the south-southeast of Belize City and is moving towards the Yucatán Peninsula, generating alerts in southeastern Mexico. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has reported on the presence of the phenomenon and the adverse weather conditions expected in the region.

According to the SMN, at 09:15 local time, the center of the storm was located 50 km south-southeast of Belize City and 155 km south of Chetumal, Quintana Roo. Sara has sustained winds of 65 km/h, with gusts of up to 85 km/h, and is moving west-northwest at 9 km/h.

The cloud bands of the storm will generate intense rains in Campeche, Chiapas, and Quintana Roo, and heavy rains in Yucatán and Tabasco. In addition, electric discharges, hail, wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h, waves of up to three meters, and the possibility of waterspouts forming in Quintana Roo are expected.

The SMN has warned about the risk of landslides, river overflows, and floods in the affected areas, recommending that the population, tourists, and maritime navigation follow the instructions from Civil Protection and stay informed through the official channels of the SMN and Conagua.

On the other hand, a prevention zone for the effects of the tropical storm has been established from Puerto Costa Maya to Chetumal, Quintana Roo. Experts continue to closely monitor the evolution of Sara in coordination with the National Hurricane Center of the United States to issue timely warnings and protect at-risk communities.
