Nuevo León Prepares for Extreme Cold Weather

Nuevo León anticipates extreme cold temperatures next week, potentially dropping to -2°C. The government's education strategy includes virtual learning to adapt to weather conditions and ensure student safety.

Nuevo León Prepares for Extreme Cold Weather

The National Water Commission (Conagua) forecasts that next week Nuevo León will experience one of the coldest Januarys in the last three years, with temperatures potentially dropping to -2 degrees in the metropolitan area and a thermal sensation of -4 degrees. Despite this, in 2022, following a power outage in Texas, temperatures of up to -12 degrees were recorded in some high areas and the southwest of the state.

In January 2022, Nuevo León had already experienced low temperatures due to cold front number 21. However, in previous years, in 1899, temperatures reached -12 degrees, in 1967 there was a snowfall that left several regions isolated, and in 1983 temperatures dropped to -7.5 degrees. The coldest municipality in the state is Galeana, located on the Potosí hill.

In light of the forecast for low temperatures, the State Government, through the Secretariat of Education, has presented a strategy to guarantee educational services in public basic education schools. It was determined that on January 20, 21, and 22, educational staff will conduct in-person, virtual, and distance classes, also through television.

The transmission of classes on television will take place through Escuela TV, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, and will be available on various platforms. In addition, the Ciberaprende platform will be used to provide support to teachers with tutorials and digital resources. The goal is to strengthen learning from home or school, using digital tools and pedagogical strategies.

Regarding in-person classes, recesses and physical activities will take place within the classroom, and families are advised to send students well bundled up and with hot beverages. In case of symptoms of respiratory illnesses, it is recommended to follow medical advice. Educational authorities urge the population to pay attention to the guidelines from the Secretariat of Health, Civil Protection, and to follow the provisions issued by the Secretariat of Education, as January is traditionally a cold month in the region.
