Trump Imposes Tariffs Affecting Mexico

Donald Trump has begun signing decrees impacting Mexico, including a 25% tariff effective February 1. President Claudia Sheinbaum urges calm as tensions rise over U.S. trade policies.

Trump Imposes Tariffs Affecting Mexico

Donald Trump became the president of the United States and has begun to sign decrees that impact Mexico, on issues such as immigration and tariffs. The president ordered to impose tariffs of 25 percent on Mexico, starting from February 1, accusing the two southern neighbors of allowing the flow of migrants and drugs into his country.

In response to this situation, President Claudia Sheinbaum was questioned during a press conference, to which she responded cautiously and asked for calm. In November 2024, Marcelo Ebrard had predicted that if tariffs were applied, Mexico would respond similarly, which would hurt U.S. imports and consequently its economy.

Ebrard pointed out that an increase in tariffs would affect U.S. companies, especially in the automotive industry. Furthermore, he warned about the consequences regarding inflation and competition with other foreign brands.

Mexico's stance is to act in accordance with the law, both on immigration issues and those related to the USMCA. Sheinbaum called for calm, to wait for dialogue with the United States, and to evaluate the situation step by step, without jumping to conclusions.

Since Trump's arrival to the presidency, there had been threats to impose tariffs of 25 percent on Mexico and Canada. Both Sheinbaum and Ebrard have previously reiterated that they would respond equivalently, warning of the negative consequences this would have for the U.S. economy.
