Selection process of the new prosecutor in Guanajuato

After the resignation of Carlos Zamarripa Aguirre, who led the Attorney General's Office of Guanajuato for more than 15 years, the State Congress is in the process of selecting a new attorney general. The governor of the state, Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, has declared that she will not hold meetings with the candidates for the position, as the Constitution does not grant her that authority. Despite her preference for personal interviews rather than simply reviewing the documents sent by the Congress, García Muñoz Ledo has chosen to stay on the sidelines.

"Reviewing the constitutional issue, there is no provision that gives me or empowers me to meet with them, although it sounds very logical," commented the governor in a video shared. Her goal in distancing herself from the process is to avoid any undue influence and promote a transparent and objective selection. Once she sends the shortlist of three candidates to the State Congress, who are the only ones authorized to conduct personal interviews, García Muñoz Ledo will remain out of the final decision.

The process for selecting the new attorney general of Guanajuato will follow these steps: notification of Zamarripa's resignation to Congress, issuance of a public call, selection of five profiles to propose to the governor, evaluation of the proposals to form a shortlist of three candidates, and the designation of the new head of the Attorney General's Office through a vote requiring a qualified majority from Congress (24 votes).
