Claudia Sheinbaum Defends Carlos Slim Against Musk

During the morning conference, Claudia Sheinbaum responded to a question from the media Publimetro México about the controversy generated by Elon Musk. The businessman had shared on social media a post that linked Carlos Slim to drug trafficking without evidence to support such accusations. In response, the president of Mexico pointed out that there is no evidence to back up such claims, emphasizing the importance of not speculating without grounds.

The controversy arose when Musk shared an article from Wall Street Mav based on a report from The New York Times that discussed the possible negative effects of designating Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. Sheinbaum reiterated that there is no investigation against Carlos Slim and criticized the association with drug trafficking, highlighting that it is false to label him that way.

The message shared by Musk suggested that Slim, with a fortune of over 70 billion dollars and an ownership stake in The New York Times, could have ties to organized crime. The post was accompanied by an emoji of a face with a monocle, symbolizing skepticism or doubt, which provoked a series of reactions for and against on social media.

Carlos Slim acquired a significant stake in the prestigious American media in 2009 through a loan, later increasing his investment and becoming one of the main individual shareholders. So far, Slim has not publicly responded to Musk's insinuations, and experts warn that such unfounded claims can affect diplomatic and economic relations between Mexico and the United States.
