
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, thanked her counterpart from Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, for showing solidarity in his call on Thursday with Mexicans in the United States following the announcement of mass deportations made by President Donald Trump.
In her morning conference, Sheinbaum mentioned: “We talked about the current situation. He expressed solidarity with the Mexicans living in the United States, which I appreciated.” Furthermore, the president pointed out that Lula "made the call" during which they reaffirmed their purpose of cultivating productive relationships with all countries in America, including the new administration of the United States, with the aim of maintaining peace, strengthening democracy, and promoting development.
Sheinbaum also highlighted that during the conversation they addressed his solidarity with Panama in the midst of Trump’s threats to retake control of the Panama Canal. They also agreed to strengthen the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), whose pro tempore presidency will be transferred to Gustavo Petro of Colombia by Xiomara Castro of Honduras next March.
The president shared that they talked not only about global issues but also bilateral, educational, cultural topics, and the relationship between Brazil and Mexico. Sheinbaum praised Lula by describing him as "an extraordinary man, a symbol not only of Brazil and the progressive struggle, but also of Latin America." Additionally, she mentioned that mutual invitations were extended for state visits in both countries.
