The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her disagreement with Donald Trump's decision to classify Mexican cartels as terrorists. Sheinbaum has started an analysis of the implications of this measure along with a group of lawyers.
In a morning conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that trade relations between Mexico and the United States are fundamental, despite Trump's statements in Davos. The U.S. president stated that they are "dealing well with Mexico" and President Sheinbaum underscored the importance of the Trade Agreement between Mexico, the United States, and Canada, which is scheduled for review in 2026 according to a decree issued by Trump.
Sheinbaum stressed the importance of joint collaboration and coordination between both countries, reaffirming that unilateral decisions are not beneficial. The head of government stated that her administration follows a "comprehensive strategy" that is yielding positive results.
Additionally, Sheinbaum reported that she is already working with a legal team to analyze the implications of classifying the cartels as terrorists. She questioned whether this designation will actually contribute to addressing the issue effectively.
