Controversial Legal Case Raises Alarm Over Judicial Practices in Mexico

In recent days, the head of the Secretariat for Women of the federal government referred to a case that she called "outrageous" and that is receiving support from her agency. Citlalli Hernández expressed her concern regarding a possible pattern of behavior in the judicial system against women who report gender violence by partners with economic power. She highlighted that in many cases, the aggressors attempt to use their influence to continue exerting violence and, at the same time, initiate legal processes against them.

Hernández pointed out that they have observed this phenomenon in different parts of the country with various judges, committing to follow up on all cases that come to their knowledge in order to seek changes in this situation.

On the other hand, Mafer Turrent's family issued a statement thanking for the support received and assuring that the woman, who is in delicate but stable condition, is no longer represented by the previous legal team. A new team was integrated in mid-December 2024, and they have not communicated with the previous firm for months.

In parallel, the prosecutor of Mexico City, Bertha Alcalde Lujan, announced the dismissal of the head of the Prosecutor's Office for Investigating Crimes Against Girls, Boys, and Adolescents amid the controversy surrounding the incarceration of Mafer Turrent, who claims that the charges against her have been fabricated by her ex-partner, Edgar ‘N’. Alcalde Lujan reaffirmed her prosecutor's commitment to ensuring impartial justice free of economic influences or those linked to power.

The prosecutor also mentioned that they are meticulously reviewing ongoing investigations to ensure impartiality and announced measures to avoid requesting precautionary measures without considering the context and the well-being of minors. They will work on updating protocols to improve transparency in the investigative process.

Mafer Turrent, through social media, had reported her ex-partner's intention to imprison her and had shared recordings in which threats could be heard. According to groups such as "Brujas del Mar", Edgar ‘N’ had filed complaints for various crimes, resulting in Turrent's preventive imprisonment. The federal Secretary for Women considered the dismissal of the prosecutor as a very important decision in this case.
