The home of the municipal president of Ayala, Nayeli Guadalupe Mares Mérida, was the target of an armed attack last Sunday, although fortunately no injuries were reported. According to reports from the Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System, the area where the incident occurred has been identified with activities related to organized crime.
This incident adds to a series of violent attacks that have shaken the eastern region of Morelos in recent months, involving several local political figures. Some of these cases include the shooting attack suffered by Jesús Corona Damián, a candidate for the municipal presidency of Cuautla, in March 2024, and the murder of Ricardo Arizmendi, the alternate mayor of Cuautla, in May of the same year.
In addition, threats against councilwoman Tania Martínez and an armed attack on the residence of councilman Mauricio Rodríguez were reported in January 2025. More recently, the municipal president of Axochiapan, Cuate Romero, was also targeted in an armed attack at his campaign house.
Following the attack on Nayeli Guadalupe Mares Mérida, authorities quickly responded by mobilizing police and paramedic units to the scene; however, the attackers managed to flee. The mayor, through her social media, expressed gratitude for her family's protection and emphasized her respect for the ongoing investigation process, stating: "We deeply appreciate the expressions of solidarity and will not make further comments until the investigation concludes."
So far, no state or municipal authority has made an official statement regarding the attack. The municipality of Ayala is located in the eastern region of Morelos, just over 61 kilometers from Cuernavaca, the state capital. The Morelos Attorney General's Office has initiated an investigation into the events, which occurred around 4:00 PM, when armed individuals on motorcycles shot at the official's home on Ayuntamiento Street in the town of Moyotepec, causing material damage to the façade but without resulting in any victims.
