
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed the pride that the Mexican people feel for their nationality. She commented that the movie 'Emilia Pérez' has generated controversy in the country. It is a musical that narrates the story of a drug trafficker known as 'Manitas del Monte', who decides to leave his criminal life to become a trans woman and an activist for the disappeared, with the help of a lawyer.
The film has been criticized in Mexico for its representation of drug trafficking and the trans community. Despite the criticisms, the movie premiered successfully in Mexico, generating 1.5 million pesos (75 thousand dollars) and attracting 20 thousand viewers in its first weekend.
Sheinbaum emphasized that she does not believe in censorship, but in the freedom of expression, referring to the controversy surrounding 'Emilia Pérez'. The film, directed by the French Jacques Audiard and starring Karla Sofía Gascón, has been the most nominated non-English film for the Oscar, with 13 categories, including Best Picture.
During a conference, Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of promoting Mexico as a cultural power, despite any criticisms the film may receive. She stressed that caring for the country’s image is crucial to attract tourism and continue projecting Mexico's cultural, historical, and traditional richness.
