Repatriation Program at AIFA for Migrants

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has formed work teams with the aim of supervising deportation programs and ensuring that the human rights of individuals deported by the Donald Trump administration are not violated. During a conference, Sheinbaum highlighted the presence of care centers and programs established to repatriate Mexican citizens for several years. Despite the fact that Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) has received four planes with deported individuals in recent weeks under the Joe Biden administration, Sheinbaum denied that deportations have increased during Trump's presidency.

As part of the Interior Repatriation Procedure (PRIM) program that began during the term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, several offices were established in national airports, which include assistance to facilitate the return of deported individuals to Mexico City. This support ranges from proof of reception, food, medical and vaccination services, to a guide on the resources available for individuals deported by the U.S. government.

In the past, the repatriation program was carried out at Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and was later moved to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). It was also emphasized that respect for the human rights of repatriated individuals is guaranteed, and in the event of violations, there is a system for filing complaints with the relevant authorities. Sheinbaum also highlighted that diplomatic efforts continue to prevent a significant increase in deportations from the United States to Mexico.

Amid the controversy arising between Colombia and the United States due to Colombian President Gustavo Petro's refusal to accept planes with migrants, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) plans an emergency meeting to coordinate efforts against the mass deportations by Donald Trump. In this context, Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed her attendance at this meeting, although it was not specified whether she would be present in person or represented.

Sheinbaum reported that in the last week, a total of 4,094 individuals were deported to Mexico, mostly Mexicans. This occurs in the context of agreements reached by the foreign ministers of Mexico and the United States, as well as the existence of a mechanism to file complaints in cases of rights violations of deported migrant individuals.
