New Electoral Reform in Mexico

Following the approval of the reforms to the Infonavit Law, the next initiative to be debated and approved in the full Chamber of Deputies will be the constitutional electoral reform regarding non-re-election and against nepotism. This reform will be sent to the Legislative Palace by President Claudia Sheinbaum on February 5, as announced by the coordinator of the Morena majority, Ricardo Monreal.

In a press conference, Monreal indicated that President Sheinbaum will present a package of reforms that include non-re-election as a constitutional reform, as well as a reform against nepotism. He also mentioned that other reforms related to energy, a new Public Works Law, a new Transparency Law, and modifications to address the absence of the extinct autonomous bodies will be discussed.

Subsequently, before discussing and approving the package of 73 regulatory laws, the initiative of President Sheinbaum regarding the conservation and protection of native corn will be addressed, with the aim of declaring corn as an element of national identity free of genetically modified organisms.

Regarding the reforms to the Infonavit Law, Ricardo Monreal launched an attack on the PAN, accusing them of lying and resorting to political and electoral strategies with their protests against it. Monreal defended that the approved law guarantees the protection and transparency of workers' resources, with mechanisms for oversight, control, and auditing.

The Morena legislator emphasized that the intention of these reforms is to eradicate corruption in Infonavit, clean it up, and allow the effective exercise of the right to housing by workers. He stated that there are no reasons to fear, given that the implemented mechanisms are designed to safeguard the interests of workers and prevent any misappropriation of funds.
