The session will be broadcast on the Congress Channel and the media will attend. Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the Senate, reacted to the 'massive' resignation of the Judicial Power Evaluation Committee and confirmed that a lottery will be held next Friday to choose the candidates. Noroña criticized both the members of this committee and the president minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Norma Piña, saying they 'do not have their word.'
'It is up to the Board of Directors to carry out the procedure that should not be interrupted until completed,' he said in an interview with Azucena Uresti. 'Additionally, what are we going to agree on with them if they have already said no, like the decision made yesterday that they had practically resigned, and the shameless are just now presenting their resignations?'.
The Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Power of the Federation (TEPJF) announced its resolution to remove the Judicial Power Evaluation Committee and allow its functions to be carried out by the Senate. The argument was that the committee acted in defiance of the TEPJF ruling that ordered it to resume its work, despite the amparo suspensions for purging the list of candidates.
Following these events, the Senate will conduct the lottery to draw candidates for the Judicial Power election next Friday, January 31 at 12:00 p.m. in the Plenary Hall. This process had already been done in the Senate to elect the positions that would be voted on in the judicial election. On this occasion, the president of the Upper Chamber explained how the draw will be conducted.
This procedure will be unprecedented and historic, conducted with total transparency, even with the presence of a notary who will certify the results. Once the list is completed according to the results of the judicial lottery, the document will be sent to the full court for them to decide whether to accept the candidates or not. If the Supreme Court rejects the proposals, the Board of Directors of the Senate will send them directly to the National Electoral Institute (INE).
