President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed attending the emergency meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) called by the pro tempore president of the body, Xiomara Castro, the president of Honduras, following the disagreement between the United States and Colombia. During her morning press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum mentioned that she would meet with the chancellor to discuss the event, but that she would not personally attend, delegating the chancellor to represent Mexico.
The president of Honduras called for this urgent meeting of presidents and heads of state from the countries that make up Celac to address specific issues such as migration, the environment, and the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean. This came after the incident on Sunday between the United States and Colombia, when Colombian President Gustavo Petro decided not to allow the entry of two planes carrying deported individuals chained and handcuffed from the United States.
The White House declared that it had resolved the crisis with Colombia regarding the repatriation of immigrants by stating that the government in Bogotá accepted "all the terms of President Trump." Despite this, the Colombian president conditioned this acceptance on the cessation of chaining migrants. Sheinbaum expressed her solidarity and coordination with all governments of Latin America, despite her decision not to attend the Celac meeting.
