Concerns About the Political Use of Prosecutors in Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed confidence in the independence of Mexican prosecutors, although she acknowledges her concern about possible political uses. The landscape of these entities shows problems such as vacancies, controversial appointments, and alleged political influences, deteriorating citizens' perception of justice in the country.

Among the recent scandals, situations like that of Alejandra Morales, former candidate from the EMEC party in San Nicolás, stand out, where Sheinbaum urged the interim prosecutor to coordinate with state security forces, despite being from a different party, to ensure peace. In the case of Nuevo León, the lack of leadership following Gustavo Adolfo Guerrero's departure as attorney general has generated uncertainty and accusations of political use within the institution.

Controversies also exist in the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office, such as criticisms of the management of Ernestina Godoy, Ulises Lara, and Bertha Alcalde, who have been pointed out for alleged political practices and lack of transparency. The appointment of Claudia Sánchez Kondo as attorney general in Sinaloa has raised criticisms due to her apparent inexperience and possible political motivations in her selection.

In the case of Uriel Carmona in Morelos, his imprisonment for alleged cover-up in a criminal case generated tension between the Attorney General's Office and local authorities. His release, following controversial judicial decisions, called into question judicial independence in the state, and Governor Margarita González Saravia has expressed her intention to request his dismissal.

On the other hand, the resignation of Guanajuato prosecutor Carlos Zamarripa, after 14 years in office, occurred amid criticisms over the violence crisis in the region. Despite accusations of political ties, some sectors consider him key in the fight against organized crime. The problems in state prosecutors' offices have reached such gravity that they have been a topic of discussion even at the Presidency of the Republic.
