Claudia Sheinbaum Reinforces Security Strategy in Mexico

The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted the decrease in homicides in the country as part of her four-pillar security strategy. She emphasized addressing the root causes of violence, the consolidation of the National Guard, intelligence against crime, and coordination between federal and state authorities.

Amid her term, which began with a high accumulated murder rate, Sheinbaum stated that she has achieved a downward trend in homicides. Although at the beginning of her administration homicides increased by 1.2 percent annually, since 2018 there has been a 27 percent reduction in intentional homicides, and since September 2024, a decrease of more than 15 percent.

During the first four months of her government, Mexican authorities have arrested more than 10,000 people for high-impact crimes, seized thousands of firearms and tons of drugs, including fentanyl. They have dismantled 139 clandestine synthetic drug laboratories and carried out various prevention and surveillance activities in different states of the country.

As part of these actions, there has been an economic impact on criminal organizations that amounts to more than 53 billion 770 million pesos. Authorities have confiscated large quantities of various drugs, such as methamphetamines and fentanyl, and intercepted shipments of chemicals used in drug production. All of this aims to combat drug trafficking and violence in Mexico.

The Mexican government seeks to maintain an effective and coordinated security policy with respect for the sovereignty of neighboring countries to address drug trafficking, reduce homicides, and control the flow of illegal weapons. With these efforts, they intend to continue building peace and security in the country, keeping the population informed about progress in this area.
