Electoral Tribunal orders lottery for judicial election

The Electoral Court ordered the Senate to conclude the work of the Judicial Evaluation Committee as it was deemed not to be fulfilling its functions. Therefore, a lottery will take place on January 30 to select the candidates, and the previous evaluation process will be suspended.

Supreme Court Minister Ana Margarita Ríos Farjat expressed her disagreement with the requirements established for the candidates. She felt frustrated that she could not finish the evaluation process of the candidates before the Electoral Court decided to stop it.

The committee resigned on January 27, citing the impossibility of evaluating the candidates. Faced with the conflicting nature of two rulings, one ordering the halt of the evaluation and the other indicating to continue, the committee decided to appeal to the Supreme Court. Ríos Farjat praised the committee's work under adverse conditions.

Ríos Farjat's proposal for the Federal School of Judicial Training to conduct the evaluations was rejected for implying delays in the process. The minister warned that election by lottery jeopardizes the suitability of the candidates by omitting a second phase of evaluation.

The judicial reform establishes tight deadlines that limit flexibility and requires all three branches of government to have an evaluation committee to select candidates. Ríos Farjat recommended appointing an entity to resume the unfinished evaluation work.

Although Ríos Farjat's proposal did not succeed, in the interview, she stated that the Judiciary is the most suitable to carry out professional evaluations. She lamented the situation of the Evaluation Committee, which was forced to resign.
