Journalist Shanik Berman has been criticized by Ana María Alvarado and Claudia De Icaza after expressing her opinion regarding the sentencing of Rodolfo Márquez Alcaraz, known as Fofo Márquez, to 17 years in prison for attempted feminicide. Berman questioned the severity of this accusation, claiming that violence is common in Mexico. This stance generated polarization on social media, with numerous criticisms towards her lack of sensitivity and accusations of normalizing violence from other entertainment journalists.
During her radio show, Shanik Berman displayed the criticisms and comments received on YouTube as a result of her statements. Ana María Alvarado and Claudia De Icaza joined in the criticism: the former advised her to be careful with her opinions and not to normalize violent acts, while the latter urged her to watch what she said to avoid being misinterpreted.
In response to the criticism, Berman defended herself on her show, admitting to being misinterpreted and attempting to clarify her arguments. She provided data on the penalties for feminicide crimes, insisting that Fofo Márquez had not committed that crime. Although she expressed her desire for justice to be equal for all criminals, she controversially referred to victims of violence, saying that they are "only half beaten."
