The Senate announced that it will be the first people in the world to elect judges by universal, secret, and direct vote. After more than 7 hours of process, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the Senate Board of Directors, completed the process of drawing candidates for the election of judges, magistrates, and ministers of the Federal Judicial Power (PJF).
In the words of the Senate president, this step towards the democratization of the Judicial Power will be completed in a few months. He highlighted the importance of this achievement and expressed his honor in leading this historic session. Noroña emphasized that the inclusion of people who had been unjustly excluded was guaranteed, thereby ensuring acts of justice.
The list of candidates was sent to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation for validation and will subsequently be forwarded to the National Electoral Institute (INE). If there were any issues in this process, the Senate will send the information directly to the electoral body. A total of 1239 applicants participated in the procedure, of which 1046 corresponded to the original registry, 180 were reinstated after challenging their exclusion, 3 were sent by the Supreme Court, and 10 additional ones were included at the request of the Electoral Tribunal.
The draw process was carried out randomly, with suitable and high-level criteria, ensuring the quality of the profiles that will go to the Judicial Power election. Noroña emphasized that the mandate of the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judicial Power has been fulfilled and described this day as a historic and fundamental step towards the election of judges.
This milestone was described as a new path for humanity from Mexico, with the electoral process scheduled for June 1, 2025.
