Opinion on Trump in Latin America: A Negative Balance

According to a study conducted in the second week of January this year, unfavorable opinion towards Trump reached 81%, showing an increase since the end of 2022. This study indicates that in the Latin American region, Trump’s image is not very positive, despite Biden, who was president at the time, receiving 33% favorable opinions, surpassing Trump by 6 points. In Mexico, the negative opinion towards Trump was 64%, the highest in the region, followed by Uruguay and Chile. In contrast, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Panama showed favorable percentages towards the former president between 39% and 45%.

In the 17 countries participating in the survey conducted in the summer of 2024, the average positive opinion towards Trump was 27%, while the negative opinion was 41%, resulting in a negative balance. For the first time in the region, no country showed a majority of opinions in favor of the former president.

International media highlighted, on January 21, Trump’s emblematic phrases such as “A 'golden age' for America begins” and “God saved me to make America great again.” Newspapers also added their own headlines such as “Unleashed Trump” from El País, and “Defiant Trump regains power” from The Wall Street Journal.

In some Latin American countries, coverage of the event was limited to quoting Trump’s phrases without further commentary, although in Mexico, threats and risks were emphasized, as well as pointing out an anti-Mexican vision in the new U.S. government. Mexican public opinion has maintained a negative stance towards Trump since his 2016 campaign, remaining firm to date according to a recent survey.
